"My country supports the autonomy initiative in the southern provinces presented by the Kingdom of Morocco to the international community as a final solution to this issue", said the Omani delegation to the UN in a written statement submitted to the Committee and published on the United Nations website.
The delegation underlined that the Moroccan autonomy initiative "has been deemed as serious and credible by the Security Council in all its relevant resolutions".
The Sultanate of Oman also urged "all the concerned parties to respond to international efforts to resolve this dispute through political negotiations, in accordance with the relevant international resolutions."
In this regard, the delegation underlines "the importance of reaching a political, realistic and pragmatic solution to the Sahara issue on the basis of compromise", while welcoming the convening of two round tables between Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario.
The Sultanate of Oman thus encouraged the concerned parties to continue their engagement within the framework of the round table process to achieve a definitive solution that would "strengthen security and stability in the region, in application of the relevant Security Council resolutions."
The Omani delegation also commended Morocco's cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights as well as the Kingdom's efforts to promote economic and social development in its southern provinces and contribute to the prosperity of the region and its inhabitants.
