During these hearings, several detainees benefited from remote trials to safeguard their health amid the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the Council pointed out in a statement.
Remote trials are monitored and implemented as a strategic choice at a time of health emergency, ensuring a balance between the right of detainees to a fair trial in accordance with all required legal guarantees and the duty of the courts to continue fulfil their constitutional and human rights obligations and functions, while safeguarding the health of everyone, the source pointed out.
The Council also welcomed efforts made by the various partners, in particular the authorities, justice institutions and professionals to carry out this project, underlining in this regard the need to show resolute commitment, vigilance and mobilization at the courts, in order to fight against the Coronavirus pandemic and preserve the health and safety of everyone.
Among these detainees, some had been released for various reasons, thanks to the implementation of the remote trial system that the Council is in charge of developing in terms of operating mechanisms and defining the indicators, according to precise standards, in harmony with its general strategic plan aimed at developing the judicial system in line with the requirements of the current stage, to curb the spread of Covid-19, the source added.
These are "positive results" achieved during this period, said the Council, noting that it is the result of the positive and constant involvement and efforts of all the authorities, institutions and stakeholders of the judicial system.
The Council also affirmed its continued commitment to the remote trial project in all judicial departments, in order to ensure that the courts continue to fulfil their constitutional duties and to enshrine the right to a fair trial within a reasonable time.
